Matthieu Amiguet: Switching Mugic to Wifi Client Mode
Matthieu Amiguet is not your typical artist. Trained as both a musician and a mathematician, he has built a unique career that bridges multiple disciplines. As a freelance musician and developer, Amiguet serves as the Artistic Director of Les Chemins de Traverse, a collaborative artistic organization. His work consistently explores the intersection of technology and creativity, pushing the boundaries of how we create and experience music.
Combining his background in mathematics, music, and programming, Amiguet has developed a groundbreaking way to control music using motion with the Mugic sensor. By tracking body movements, musicians can now generate complex jazz harmonies with a single instrument.
How Matthieu Uses MUGIC
The Mugic is a 9-axis sensor that translates physical movement into musical parameters. In Amiguet's demonstration, a flute player can:
- Change chord qualities by moving position
- Use a dice mechanic to select specific harmonic variations
- Create four-part jazz harmonies from a single instrument
Practical Application
For the Summer Academy at La Côte Flûte Festival, Amiguet and Les Chemins de Traverse purchased seven Mugic sensors. This allowed each student in the Augmented Instruments workshop to explore motion-based musical control.
Technical Solution
Facing challenges with the Mugic's WiFi configuration, Amiguet developed custom Python scripts to:
- Automate device setup
- Connect multiple Mugics to a single network
- Overcome limitations in existing configuration tools
Key Technical Tips
- Use WiFi SSIDs at least 8 characters long
- Avoid special characters in network names
- Develop robust network scanning methods
- Always have a device reset strategy
Impact
Amiguet's work demonstrates how programming, sensor technology, and musical creativity can expand the boundaries of musical performance. His scripts provide a practical toolkit for musicians and technologists interested in augmented musical interfaces.
For detailed implementation on using the Web interface to switch from AP to Client mode, to set up and connect multiple MUGICS with an external router, please check out his original blog! Thanks so much Matthieu!!!
Matthieu Amiguet also shared some Python code that allows users to control graphics with MUGIC®. You can check it out below along with his GitHub!
